Random Update

I wrote my penultimate assignment for my OU philosphy course last week, discussing whether there is good reason to believe in an intelligent designer of the universe, with reference to the modern argument for design. In short: no. I think I put forward a good argument or two. It is getting to that time where I need to reserve my place on next year's course, and I think I will take the follow-up philosophy course, on political philosophy this time, as I had planned. I hope it all goes well, because I think it would be neat to have an honours degree in philosophy.

I ordered myself a new graphics card for my Mac as well, the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I think it's the best card that will go in to my not-that-old G4 system, and I am hoping that the difference it will make will be very much noticable when compared to my 9000 Pro that is installed currently. World of Warcraft should be smoother, and I may even give UT2004 another run, and I hope Knights of the Old Republic is smoother, as for some reason that ran like a dog on my machine. My Powerbook, surprisingly, ran KotOR better than my desktop.

As a distance-ed librarian, I'm curious as to what kind of library support you get from OU. Do they send you books? Online databases/journal articles? Do they refer you to local libraries or bookstores? Are all your books and articles available online or by mail?

The course books are written by the OU specifically for the course and cover all the material for the course with instructions, exercises, counter-points, and references to other works if we wish to follow-up on any particular sections. It is made clear that while extra materials may help our grade we can get perfect scores just using the course material. Other set texts are sent with the course books, or ordered separately from recommended shops.

As for libraries, the OU has one in Milton Keynes at its headquarters, with facilities for post-graduate and doctorate studies, as well as research. For all students, I think the OU has an agreement with many universities around the country to allow OU student card-carrying students to access the university libraries, which gives us access to a vast range of resources.
